 What causes clothes dryer fires?

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, clothes dryer fires are caused by:

- Lint build up in the dryer and exhaust duct, blocking the flow of air
- Lack of maintenance
- Improper and flammable items in dryers such as foamed-backed rugs
or athletic shoes
- Improper installation (venting)
- Use of plastic ducts
- Failure or mechanical and/or electrical parts within the dryer
- Vinyl and foil venting material that easily collapses when installed

How do I know when to have my dryer vents cleaned?

Dryer Manufacturers, Fire Departments, Insurance Companies, and The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission agree that annual maintenance is important. Even with new construction, it is important to have the dryer vent system inspected by a professional. The technician will then be able to determine a good maintenance schedule.

What are the warning signs?

These are warning signs to let you know that there may be a potential fire hazard:

Clothes, especially towels or jeans, take a long time to dry.
If your clothing is still damp at the end of a normal drying cycle
or requires longer dryer times, then you may have a fire hazard
in and around your clothes dryer.
Clothes are hotter than usual at the end of the drying cycle.
The flapper on the vent hood doesn't open when the dryer is on.

How long should my dryer vent be?

The maximum length of a dryer vent should not exceed 25 feet. But keep in mind that the small dryer motor is blowing wet lint around elbows in the vent. These elbows tend to accumulate lint much faster. Make sure the exhaust duct is unrestricted and free from blockage, and never exhaust a dryer into any other duct, gas vent, chimney or crawl space. To facilitate airflow the exhaust pipe should be as short as possible and have a limited number of bends.

When our professional technicians inspect your clothes dryer exhaust duct, we completely disassemble the dryer and conduct a thorough cleaning of all internal components (many are high-voltage parts). We then make sure there are no obstructions and we verify that the correct type of vent is in use and installed properly.

Our company uses the highest quality, most advanced system of its type to solve your dryer's lint problem safely and effectively. Using a combination of suction from a high powered vacuum and the thorough cleaning action of a rotating brush, the dangerous lint is collected and completely removed from your venting system and from the dryer itself.

Atlanta Pro Cleaners state-of-the-art equipment will remove blockages such as bird nests, and can pinpoint the location of problems within a wall or ceiling. Our charge for this service is surprisingly reasonable, often paying for itself in lower service and utility costs

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission offers these safety tips:

Clean the lint filter regularly, before and after each load
(this also saves on energy)
Check the dryer regularly to make sure it is operating properly
While the dryer is operating, check outside exhaust to make sure
exhaust air is escaping normally
Check the exhaust duct more often if you have a plastic, flexible duct
Check the exhaust duct for kinks or any signs of crushing
Closely follow the manufacturer's instructions for new installations
(most specify the use of a rigid or flexible metal duct to provide a
minimum restriction of airflow)
New residential areas, as well as remodeling projects, should specify
all metal dryer venting
Use sheet metal vent pipes
(they are more fire resistant and will contain fires better than plastic)
The exhaust pipe should be as short as possible and have a limited
number of bends to facilitate airflow
Place dryers near an outside wall using pop rivets, not screws, to
connect metal vent pipe pieces
Clean the lint out of the exhaust pipe and the exhaust dryer once a year
Ducts should be no longer than 25 feet
Duct joints should be installed so the pipe connections point in the direction
of the airflow, away from the dryer
Dryer vents should be independent of all other systems and terminate
outdoors, outside termination hood should be equipped with a back draft damper
Assure the rodent and bird screen protection is intact
If you need assistance to clean the vents, call a professional company
Dry only full loads of laundry
Use the cool down cycle
Don't leave the house with the dryer in operation
